Black Jack Glossary

The common used terms at Blackjack:

Blackjack
A combination of an Ace and a 10, an Ace and a J, an Ace and a Q, or an Ace and a K.
Burn Card
One or more cards to be discarded or “burned” without being dealt to the players.
Bust
After a “hit”, when the hand goes over 21 with the new card.
Card Counter
Player who “count” dealt cards to improve his edge.
Comps
Player's expenses paid by the house.
Cut Card
A plastic card used to cut the cards after they have been shuffled.
Double Down
To double the initial bet, often allowed on the first two cards, and receive one more card.
Double Exposure
When the blackjack dealer's cards are dealt face up.
Hit
When the player or the dealer ask another card.
Hole Card
The dealer's card that is placed face down
Insurance
A side bet offered when the blackjack dealer's upcard is an Ace. This pays 2:1 if the dealer has a natural 21.
Marker
An IOU, a line of credit from the casino to a creditworthy player.
Natural
A hand of 21 on the first two cards.
Push
A tie hand between the dealer and a player when the original bet is returned to the player.
Shoe
A box for holding multiple decks of undealt cards.
Soft Hand
A hand total that includes an Ace that can be counted as 1 or 11. It is always possible to draw one card to a soft hand without busting.
Split
Hands that strats with two cards of the same rank that can be split into two hands. This option is exercised by adding a new bet to the second hand
Stand
To stop drawing cards. The opposite of “hit”.
Stiff Hand
The hand totals of 12 through 16, that has a small chance of winning.
Surrender
A rule that allows the player to give up the first two card and lose only 1/2 of your bet.
Up Card
Dealer's first card that is dealt face up.
