The largest card room in Europe, Dusk Till Down, may now also become the first legal poker venue in the United Kingdom. After a hearing that took place on Monday, September 24th, the club will have to wait for the verdict, scheduled to be delivered on the 28th.
Dusk Till Down’s managing director Rob Yong explained they have full support from the Gambling Commission, from which they got a Certificate of Consent. Still, the challenge arises from local operators –Gala, London Clubs International and Stanleys- who claimed ‘insufficient demand’ for the new venue.
“This has nothing to do with ‘insufficient demand’. It’s just an attempt by the big boys to keep a stranglehold on their monopoly,” Yong said. “They only care about profits and not about their players,” he added.
If the Nottingham’s Magistrates court decides to allow the club to function, it will become a huge poker venue, with seating for over 400 players –four times any of its competitors. It will also become the country’s first legal poker venue.
