Poker marathon for charity

On December 29th, Warwickshire will hold a 24-hour poker tournament in the name of charity. All the money collected will be given to the Myton House Hospice, an institution that needs £5 million to build and buy equipment for new facilities for their increasing number of patients. Fred Hepburn of Enterprise Inns, will host the poker marathon.

This event is possible thanks to the changes introduced by the 2005 Gambling Act, which allow pubs to offer low and no stakes poker.

II Croupier Championship in Spain

The second edition of the Croupier Championship in Spain will take place on February 6 to 7 2008 at Casino Torrequebrada. The first and second best croupiers in the final tournament will represent Spain in the next European Championship, which will be held in Venice.

The croupier works for the casino, both distributing the game –like throwing the ball in roulette or dealing cards in blackjack- and taking care of payments. A good croupier makes sure games are played by the rules. Croupier tasks are mechanical, all clearly established.

The Orenes Group announced the opening of its Croupier School. The announcement has been a success, with over 300 applicants registered. All of them wanting to become future professionals in blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat and poker tables.

The Croupier School of Grao is located in the entertainment complex Puerto Azahar, in Spain. The Orenes Group, which will also manage Gran Casino Castellón, is in charge of the school. The center has all the equipment of a gambling venue.

Julian Thew wins the Baden European Poker Tour

Thousands of poker players from around the world gathered together outside of Vienna, Austria, to compete in the Baden European Poker Tour event. Famous poker pros like Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, Barry Greenstein and Katja Thater also showed up to play in the event, which started on Sunday and continued through Wednesday.

English poker player Julian Thew, from Nottingham, was the winner of the Baden Open and took home €670,800, after defeating Hungarian player Denes Kalo in the final table.

The largest card room in Europe, Dusk Till Down, may now also become the first legal poker venue in the United Kingdom. After a hearing that took place on Monday, September 24th, the club will have to wait for the verdict, scheduled to be delivered on the 28th.

Dusk Till Down’s managing director Rob Yong explained they have full support from the Gambling Commission, from which they got a Certificate of Consent.

New opening delay for Glasgow’s casino

A new delay was announced for the opening of a huge casino in Glasgow. The gambling venue, which was expected to open in summer 2006, will be called “Alea” after an ancient Roma game of chance and is being built on the banks of the River Clyde.

The cause of the delay is the decision of the casino authorities to start hiring staff. They are looking for experienced or trainee blackjack and poker dealers, roulette wheel operators and cashiers. There are 250 positions available including croupiers, waitresses and cleaning and maintenance personnel.

Trading card for Blackjack winner

Though it is quite usual for baseball or football players to appear on trading cards, this is the first time a blackjack champion is featured in one. World Series of Blackjack inaugural champion Michael Aponte was chosen by Topps to be part of the 2007 Topps Allen & Ginter set of trading cards, available worldwide as of this week.

The set features 20 world champions from different disciplines, plus 300 baseball celebrities and 25 historic personalities. A limited number of cards have been signed by Aponte and other players.
